When the AE-1 came out, TTL manual-metering models (including the Canon FTb and FTb-N) were still the mainstream in the 35mm SLR market. Autoexposure models were still at the very top end of the SLR market. They were expensive and produced in small numbers.

Dave Dugdale from learningdslrvideo recorded this (revised) quick tip video on how to find out how many shutter clicks your had on your Canon EOS camera (important for example for when you want to buy or sell a camera). This piece of info is quite hard to find in Canon cameras (Nikon is easy – they have this data on each JPEG image in the EXIF so just use an exif tool such as Phil Harvey’s “ExifTool” and Opanda’s IExif or even this website).

For Canon you can try and use the shutter count tool (for windows only mind you) which you can download from this address and follow Dugdale’s very simple instructions.
