The utility is for windows users, is free and will work on most recent Canon EOS Digital Cameras (models since 2010). Informations can be read from a USB-con.

Besides shutter count, the following data is read and displayed: Serial number (not available with some cameras). Digic V cameras have a firmware bug that prevents proper display of the serial number. Canon EOS 5D Mark III firmware v1.2.1 restores proper serial number for that model. Camera datetime. Firmware version. I had an email come in from a reader asking if I knew how to find out the shutter count for a Canon 5D Mark III. Off the top of my head I didn’t know a specific answer, but I was aware that Canon makes it tricky and it would most likely involve using some third-party software. The application is compatible with the Canon EOS series and can read information from various models, including 350D, 450D, 1000D, Rebel T2i, Rebel XSi, 5D Mark II and Mark III. Other models may. Just discovered this by accident and what a pleasant surprise. There is a built-in shutter counter in 5D MK III. Just go to Menu, then Battery Info, and voila! Funny thing is that the camera's manual doesn't even mention this. Another strange thing is why bury this info in the 'Battery Info'? I thought I'd share this in case you didn't know about this...

That isn't the overall shutter count, its the amount of photos taken on that charge. The actual shutter count would be a nice feature too have in camera tho

Ha, I got completely fooled, then! You see, I got this camera about 2 months ago and the number of shutter count showed 289, which is just about right given the number of shots I've taken since getting it. Okay, I thought the camera was 'smarter' than it really is! The real built-in shutter counter would be pretty nice...

I have one canon OEM battery and two Wasabi. I haven't charged batteries in a month. one Wasabi I just got down to 5% and it shows 782 photos and I had alot of chimping and eyefi use and this was in the camera for two weeks. The other one is still sitting at 30% and shows 711 photos.
These Wasabi are awesome.

Yup, I use Wasabi for both my 5D3 and XA10 and can't be more content with them.

There is a built-in shutter count but Canon chooses not to let the user see it. If you install Magic Lantern you can see it.

As far as I know, today it's only the 1DX which displays the shutter click count within the menu system on the camera. For everyone to see.

I've got a Mac app (I think it was $1.99) that will let me check the shutter count on most new bodies, 5D3 included. No need to mess with installing/removing magic lantern for just shutter count.

Why does it show +/- 884?

Most shutter count programs don't include Liveview actuations. Magic lantern does.
The image above shows 3,883 photo actuations (rounded up to 4K), 4767 total shutter actuations of which 884 was for Liveview or Video.
Magic Lantern has updated the shutter count display to avoid confusion, and it now looks like this.
19,529 Total (rounded up to 20K) = 16497 photo actuations + 3032 Liveview actuations
