Plex The Server Is Not Powerful Enough To Convert Video

I had that same message come up while trying to stream news video via Plex. I adjusted my server side transcoder setting to automatic, removed the remote stream quality limitation, and made sure the app I was using had the quality setting set to convert automatically.

I’d been doing fine with my WD EX II Ultra on OS3, ignoring the daily emails from it that there was an upgrade available… and I figured yesterday that probably enough time had passed to get a smooth upgrade to OS5 and the latest Plex version.

Wrong.

Feb 28, 2019 Generally, the more powerful the Plex Media Server’s CPU the better, as transcoding is a CPU intensive process. If you have a choice between adding more RAM (assuming there’s enough RAM for the operating system to run well) or a faster/better CPU, choose CPU for better Plex transcoding performance. AS a work around you can install PLEX on your computer and then point the PLEX libraries to the EX2 Ultra as the storage location for your content. This will basically use your computer as the PLEX server which will have enough power to trascode the videos. Mike27oct October 9, 2018, 4:28am #4. Streaming Plex videos on your Chromecast. Whether or not you decide to set up Plex for Chromecast and generate optimized videos, you’ll start and stop casting in the same way. Starting playback. To start playback, open a copy of the video you want to cast on your computer or mobile device.

Immediately, the series that I was in the middle of no longer works. Almost every video in my library gives a message about the server not being powerful enough to convert video, including the episodes I watched earlier this week. That’s on my iPad app, on the web, my Amazon fire stick… they don’t work on anything.

I’ve tweaked every setting I can find to try to prevent it from trying to transcode video, and toggled half of them trying to find a sweet spot, but nothing seems to work:

Quality

  • Internet streaming
    – Video quality maximum
Play smaller videos at original quality
  • Home Streaming
    Use recommended settings

Player

  • Audio & Subtitles
    Normalise Multi-channel Audio
    Burn Subtitles Only image formats

Transcoder
Disable video stream transcoding

Here’s something that won’t play, which has been transcoded using the same programme as just about everything in my library:
